Japanese Wood Block Prints

Wood block printing is a technique that has been used in the East for centuries. Run over 2 weeks, Marcia will teach participants the process of hand carving blocks of wood and transferring images to create prints with vivid colours.  Hand made paper, called Washi, will be used, with participants soaking the Washi, painting the coloured ink pigments onto an individual carved woodblock, laying the wet Washi onto the block and rubbing the exposed back of the paper with a rounded wooden object called a Baren, until the colour has been absorbed into the wash.

Marcia graduated from The University of UNSW with a Bachelors degree in Visual Arts, Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne University, with a Graduate Diploma in Visual Arts and Monash University with a Diploma of Education, Art Specialist. Her professional interest and practice as an artist is in storytelling and the environment, combining printmaking, mixed media and digital media. She has gained further professional experience as an exhibiting artist, curator, high school art teacher and in 2015 was part of the Artful Leadership for Community Building Program participant (Country Arts WA).
